Would you hire a remote college student developer or designer?

Definitely. The only thing that concerns me is the quality of the work. As long as the remote college student is focused on completing the project within the deadline meeting the requirements, it is fine for me.

Eitan, to answer your questions:

1. Yes. In fact, I did.

2. But: I would check your references. I would need to see your past work. (I know, it may mean chicken/egg problem for you).

3. I'd prefer not to pay per hour. I prefer milestones basis: breaking down the project into a number of phases and then paying upon acceptance of each phase. Then I know you actually work and you are incentivized to produce quality work. If you are confident, that you are, it shouldn't be a problem.

4. I wouldn't pay as much as I would pay to an established professional, but I wouldn't want to take advantage of you either. If you are a student, your primary objective is to learn and work for your resume so that later it would work for you. We've all been there, so don't price yourself out. Unless, of course, you are fast and produced verified remarkable quality work in the past.

5. Your question "how much would you pay" is premature. Too many "it depends" factors.

Hey Eitan! Remotely no, not without knowing you. I use upwork for remote work. Locally Yes definitely.

College students are fun to work with and interesting. I have built good IT company from a lot of amazing talented and gifted hard working college students and will continue to do so.

1. Anyone would hire student developers if they produced good work. Even remotely if you made it easy enough to communicate.
2. I would pay per project to test your skills and after I would negotiate hourly or weekly rate.
3. If to hire a whole team, I would have to assign one responsible leader or coordinator of the work. At this level, it sounds like a serious coding team and definitely needs a good team structure with a team lead. Doesn't matter where they are as long as they can communicate and have regular meetings.
4. About rates, have a look at upwork.com and check what people charge there for similar work. Rates vary a lot. Best rates are for your local market and for face to face clients once they value your services. Age is not a barrier to best rates. I have paid my workers 21 and under anything from $20 to $110 per hour for technical work.

I have no problem with working with people in different locations and if the person/team is passionate and gets what we are trying to create then I am not bothered if they are students.

As to what I would pay I want co-founders not contractors/employee's as I am not quite ready to go into another funding range. However we are not far from decent revenue streams but have a few more months of hard work ahead.

My preference tends to skew towards working with those that are located in my home city given the potential for building a strong working relationship in a shorter period of time. That being said, this is not always practical or possible and I am not adverse to working with someone remotely.

As it relates to the student aspect- I would agree with most that as long as you have solid references/work to show or are able to to demonstrate your aptitude via milestone based projects I wouldn't have any concerns. In fact, it is possible that your student status could be a benefit over other freelancers if it provides you more time to devote towards the project at hand.

In terms of compensation in the form of cash/equity/combo, it all depends on the scope of the project and whether there is a desire for a longer term partnership.
