Well both of them are very popular and well famous. But before choosing something for your e-commerce website you should understand whether the above two are matching your requirement.

Firstly- Bigcommerce is cloud computing which means you can access it anywhere from any computer thus giving you genuine accessibility.

Magento is (SaaS) which means the software has to be installed in all your servers and computer.

Secondly- In Bigcommerce you are really not bothered with hosting and all. It does mostly everything for you . for Magento you have to do everything after buying the on premise software you need to look forward for hosting and all.

Thirdly- Bigcommerce is already a defined set of plugins and everything which means u don't have the accessibility to have the full ownership. You can't develop it further according to your choice. But this is possible in Magento, if you have your own IT team and you want to develop it all according to your ideas and implemation then go for it.

Fourthly- For Bigcommerce the cost is quite less as compared to Magento ( since in Magento you have to pay for hosting, license, bugs fixes, security and PCI compliance etc but for Bigcommerce you don't have to pay for this)

But both of them have their own benefit it totally depends on your requirement.

Second it. For the scope of your project, magneto would be a better choice for ecom.

If you have a 1000-8000 product you can go with big commerce. But if the product count is far greater than this you should go with magento.

The answer is "it depends." This should be a very simple pros and cons list. Both vendors should be able to address your needs today and in the future. The answer may be that neither is the right fit for you. It all depends on what you need to accomplish with your web site, and what amount of money or effort you are comfortable putting in to get it (add-ons, specialists, procedure adjustments, etc.). Likely you will need to make some compromises with either tool. But if you haven't finished your plan enough to give you a list of requirements for your web presence, work on that first. And then use it like a checklist.

If you need any customization done magneto is the way to go. Good thing I found out after a couple of meeting is that BigCommerce allow app extensions and you are able to hire magneto partners to create your plugin to the BigCommerce store. So either way you will be fine. I would suggest speaking to them over Skype and the phone to have all your questions answered!
