What do you think are the steps followed by fortune companies and others in terms of lead generation/prospect building?

I am currently consulting a fortune company for their B2B lead generation activity. I must say that they have a clear understanding about their target audience and approach them in a very unique fashion.

I am willing to hear from experts who have some past experience in similar engagement.
