One of the best sources for seed funding is actually the US government! The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a $2.5 billion fund distributed across 11 federal agencies (DOD, NIH, NASA, etc.) that supports small businesses and startups in developing new technologies.

Getting funded through the SBIR program can take quite some time (typically 6-12 months after a proposal is submitted), but the government doesn't take any equity. Some well-known companies got their start with SBIR funds including iRobot, Symantec, and Qualcomm to name a few.

You can learn more about the SBIR program from the program's main website at SBIR.gov or get some quick info from my website blog.
