I will first introduce myself briefly. I have developed a product to restrict the unwanted usage of mobile phones. My target group is schools, companies/factories and also events were it is not allowed to take pictures. Basically, organizations where the usage of mobile phones and/or its camera is a disturbing factor or even forbidden. The first few ‘large’ players for events have shown interest. I do not want to be too focused on sales, especially not internationally. I want to do this with the help of distributors and/or sales agents. For a while now I am struggling in landing distributors. A little overview of the situation:
- Australia: Long contact with school material supplier, at the end they said their margins were too low (even though I already gave them 50% profit margin on the smallest quantity)
- France: Had contact with distributor, language was an issue, received help from a local frenchman who called, my contactperson was very hard to reach but after a while answered that it hadn’t had to do with my product but he was leaving the function. We sent some questions e.g. ‘What do you require for our product to succeed in France’, it would be picked up by his follow-up but never got any answer. I contacted him on LinkedIn but he didn’t reply.
I’m not sure how to continue now. I’ve dug into sales agents. I came across a few platforms; CommissionCrowd, UpinSales, Agentbase and Agents24, but they all look sketchy.
My question is: how to proceed from here? How do I find the right party to sell my product?
Thank you for your time and I hope someone is able to give his 2 cents on how to proceed.
Most resellers/distributors aren't very interested in becoming partners until you have perfected your direct sales process. It sounds like you may be 100% a wholesale business and expecting them to do your sales for you. That's not appealing. They want to know that you've figured out how to quickly close sales and have happy customers. They're not very interested in figuring it out for you. When you can package the advice, guidance, sales materials, and strategy with a reseller agreement, plus sales figures, cost of acquisition, and advertising options most appropriate for specific target markets, you're far more likely to win over resellers.
They have a lot of options when it comes to carrying products. Don't be a me too...this'll be great, customers love it...kind of manufacturer. Be one who can show them exactly what their commitment needs to be to make a specific amount of money. That'll get attention.
Maybe I'm missing something, but you are in the Netherlands. Do you have local sales before going international? Again, I probably missed something, but to Paul's point. Why would someone in a different country want to sell something for you that you haven't been able to sell yourself?
You should be literally pounding the pavement in Amsterdam to figure out how it sell it and prove your assumptions on your target market. Just think you are getting ahead of yourself with the international aspirations.
Could you say a little more about the product ? My initial thought is that you may not have the bandwith for sales or supply chain distribution , so probably get a co-founder or outsource . What really is the product ?!
