Know of tech tools to categorize your contacts?

One thing I'd love to find is tech that can automatically categorize your contacts, whether based on your contact file itself (eg Google Contacts) or on LinkedIn (which would be even better).

The idea is I could request a list of everyone who I know who is at a Fortune 500 company, or works in the entertainment industry, or who works at a VC firm. I'd then ideally be able to sort that further by role or seniority, etc, along with geography. 

And again, this is all for people I know already when I don't want to look by company. Does any off-the-shelf tool do this?

I've been putting together a complete set of features around information organization, visualization, and sharing in a mobile, desktop, and web app.  These are the kinds of features that would be on the filtering side.  I simply have to build it. ;-)

I agree with Rob, although the reality is that in a decade, Microsoft has done precious little to enhance Outlook's address book.  I am not holding my breath, but if someone wants to build this, I have a way to trip enable every contact so you can get driving directions, hotel booking nearby and optional car rental and air to see your prospect/client.

If I correctly understand your request, we solved that with tags, custom user fields, etc.

Automatic categorization i don't know about - i don't know that even a LinkedIn has the ability to automatically codify a contact by industry, company type, F500, etc. though they likely have enough data to get you close.  I would think there are CRM apps that could get you close as well.  Certainly MS Outlook as the ability to classify and sort your contacts by a variety of fields including custom fields, but you have to add tags to each contact as you enter them.  Gmail also has the ability to add custom fields.

certainly between Microsoft and LinkedIn they will have the data and filtering capabilities to get you most of the way if not all the way there, but that doesn't solve the problem today unless you manually tag each contact in something like Outlook.

The closest I've come to is ViporCRM, but it's Mac only, but is free and uses something they call "Orbits" but I've been using it for a year and very helpful and highly customizable, works across the Apple ecosystem. Created by one of the founders of Act! there is also FullContact, which has some capabilities in this regard but has a fee to it.

Seems like all this can be accomplished with the advanced search in LinkedIn. You do need a premium account to get all the filters though.
