How do you put a value on data?

I am doing some consulting for a startup and one of the possible revenue streams is selling of our database to market research companies.

I wanted to know how can you estimate the value of a database or mailing list and if anyone has some experience doing it.

Hi Leonard, my company specializes in selling data assets.  We don't price on data assets qualitative value.  It goes against the market grain, but I'm happy to discuss synergies with you and market overlap.  We currently and typically generate around 10GB/day and go for dataset sizes of 100k for our customers.  Tell me what you're up to a little more and I'll be happy to exchange stories.

Hi Leonard
My company Verifeed sells the "insights" or "answers" and is careful not to commoditize data.
It really depends on the value of the outcomes the data can bring - and how big of a pain point the data addresses. Does it solve a problem worth millions? Or is it just nice to have? Who's buying it - and why.

Hope that helps
