How do I get users for my new app?

I just released a new iOS app on the app store but I'm having a hard time with the marketing side of things. So far I've only been marketing using social media. Friends and family have been downloading it but I find that they aren't even using it (yes, I can tell if they use it). I will venture to say that they are downloading it because they want to be nice but they don't really care to incorporate it in their everyday lives. How do I get over this initial hump?

Hello Emmanuel.

I checked out your app, won't mention it seeing as you didn't. .

However in order to address some of the issues and provide suggestions, I need to be able to talk about your app objectives. Do I have permission to do so, or do you want me to send over the feedback in private?

Private or public, I need more information about your app.

Cheers, Ace.

For those of you who want to try the app before you contribute to this discussion, you can find it in the App Store under the name, Tidycave.

I don't have much experience in the app store, but a friend writes expensively on it. Check out Jeremy Olson's stuff (@jerols) on medium:

He comes at it from a developer perspective.

A few things could be going wrong: (1) you could be doing too little marketing (you didn't say how much you spent or what your reach was); (2) you could be marketing to the wrong group (on your profile it says that it's a niche app, which means it's important to accurately target those users that it would actually help); (3) you could be doing a poor job communicating which problem your app solves; (4) if relevant users are downloading your app, but not using it, then the problem may lie with the design of the app itself.

Sorry if these seem obvious, but it's hard to tell from your description how you could get more users given that the solution to each of these problems is different. Do you have a sense of which one it is? Specifically, excluding friends and family, are you not getting a lot of downloads or are you getting downloads but not usage?
