That is a very good topic. I was watching a professional golfer talk about how many of the tour pro’s have psychologist to work with them throughout the year. When you think of it, how is that any different than an executive performing where millions are on the line and hundreds or thousands of jobs?
If you are asking in terms of should psychologist or counselors be provided at the workplace, the problem becomes in the legal aspect of protection of medical information. That is also why health insurance covers it. Could it be encouraged more? Probably. Anyone who looks at life as it is now and thinks its normal, is out of their minds. There is hardly anything normal about the world we live these days. It is insane. In my lifetime anyway, I have never looked around the globe and seen so many poor leaders to society be they in politics or business or sports or entertainment. It is despicable.
Psychology is used every day and all around us to take from us, so certainly it makes sense it should be used more to give back to us in terms of health. Look at politics, especially, the manipulation of truth from the media these days. And every product we buy….literally every aspect of our life has someone communicating a message. Young and old who struggle to find identity. People are walking billboards.
It absolutely plays into the health of the working place. The question is how do you correct it, or change it? Exercise? Turn off the phone, the social media, the T.V? All good starts.
Psychology plays into the success of entrepreneurship in a way many overlook. It is not taught in business school, and yet is one of the most important aspects of deal negotiation, and every day business management. You have undoubtedly seen the “doom and gloom” posters on this site who like to throw up stats of how often entrepreneur’s fail. Half the battle is mental from a psychological element of encouraging oneself and others to believe and build.
I would say psychology is overused toward us in terms of how corporations study how to get in consumers minds or move a “hurd” of employees caught up in the machine. And I would say it is underused in terms of truly looking out for the wellbeing of the above. My opinion purely.
